New Delhi, Dec 14: Nearly 48 crore individuals have enrolled in the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), a scheme offering Rs 2 lakh accident insurance coverage, the Finance Ministry said on Saturday.
According to a social media update on X, the total number of enrollees under PMSBY has reached 47.59 crore, with 1,93,964 claims received and 1,47,641 claims disbursed so far.
The PMSBY, a renewable one-year accident insurance scheme, provides coverage for death or disability resulting from an accident. Individuals aged between 18 and 70 with a bank or post office account are eligible for the scheme. For an annual premium of just Rs 20, beneficiaries receive a cover of Rs 2 lakh for accidental death or disability (Rs 1 lakh for partial disability).
The Finance Ministry also highlighted the success of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), which has become a pillar of financial inclusion, benefiting over 54 crore citizens. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 28, 2014, PMJDY marked its 10th anniversary this year. It remains the world's largest financial inclusion initiative, aiming to provide financial access to underserved and economically disadvantaged communities.
As of August 14, 2024, PMJDY had a total of 53.13 crore accounts. Notably, women hold 55.6% (29.56 crore) of these accounts, and 66.6% (35.37 crore) of the accounts are based in rural and semi-urban areas. The total deposit balance under these accounts stands at Rs 2,31,236 crore, with deposits having increased by more than 15 times, and the number of accounts growing by 3.6 times since the scheme’s launch.
