President Murmu honours Shekhar Kapur with Padma Bhushan for contributions to Cinema

New Delhi, April 28: Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur received the Padma Bhushan award from President Droupadi Murmu for his contribution to the field of Art. The government announced the Padma Awards on the eve of the 76th Republic Day, and the award ceremony took place on Monday evening in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.

Kapur is celebrated for his powerful storytelling and visionary direction in films such as Bandit Queen and the critically acclaimed British biographical drama Elizabeth, which earned him Best Director nominations at the BAFTAs and Golden Globes. Its sequel, Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007), led to Cate Blanchett winning her first Oscar for acting. He also directed The Four Feathers (2002), one of Heath Ledger’s final films. His earlier works like Masoom and Mr. India remain beloved by audiences even today.

Reacting to the honour on January 25, 2025, Kapur expressed his gratitude on X, writing, “Am humbled that the Government of India has considered me to be deserving of a #Padmabhushan. Hopefully this award will make me strive harder to serve the Industry that I am part of, and the beautiful Nation that I am so fortunate to belong to. Thank you also to our film audiences of India, for I am because you are.”

Fans and well-wishers quickly flooded social media with congratulatory messages. Actor Adil Hussain posted, “Delighted to hear that one of the most deserving person has been bestowed with this Honour. Big Congratulations to you!” Kapur’s sister, actor Sohaila Kapur, also shared her heartfelt congratulations online.
