New Delhi, January 7: The Five-judge bench of the Supreme Court will consider reviewing petitions related to its October 2023 ruling On January 9, which had declined to grant legal recognition to same-sex marriage.

This is a crucial moment for the LGBTQIA+ community and advocates of marriage equality as the new five-judge bench takes up the review petitions.
The bench comprising of Justices B R Gavai, Justice Surya Kant, Justice B V Nagarathna, Justice P S Narasimha, and Justice Dipankar Datta will deliberate on 13 petitions concerning the matter and will hear the matter in chambers.
The bench has the discretion to hold an open court hearing if it agrees with the petitioners that the case warrants oral arguments due to its significance. However, as per standard procedure, review petitions are typically considered in chambers, and the Supreme Court had previously declined to hold an open-court hearing for these petitions.
