New Delhi, Feb 25: Shaktikanta Das, former governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), on Monday assumed charge as Principal Secretary-2 to Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the PMO in New Delhi.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet had approved the appointment of Das, a native of Odisha and a former IAS officer of Tamil Nadu cadre, on Saturday (February 22).
His appointment will be co-terminus with the term of the Prime Minister or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
The former bureaucrat is the second person from Odisha to secure a key position in the Prime Minister’s Office.
Das was appointed as the 25th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in 2018 and received a three-year extension in 2021. His tenure as RBI Governor concluded on December 10 last year, marking six years in the role.
During the demonetization of high-value currency notes in November 2016, Das served as the Economic Affairs Secretary.
He holds a master’s degree in History from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, and a postgraduate degree in Public Administration from the University of Birmingham.
Notably, Pramod Kumar Mishra is serving as the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister. A former Gujarat cadre IAS officer, he is also a native of Odisha.
