Sambalpur, Mar 11: Police in Odisha’s Sambalpur district nabbed two cattle smugglers following an encounter in the wee hours of Tuesday.
The identities of the smugglers have not been disclosed by the police.
Acting on a tip-off, police intercepted a truck carrying 30 cattle illegally to West Bengal at a checkpoint near city station area. After being intercepted, the smugglers who were escorting the truck opened fire at the police.
The cops retaliated back in which the smugglers sustained bullet injuries, one in his left leg below the knee and the other in his right leg below the knee. Both of them rushed to Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences in Burla for medical treatment.
The cops have seized two pistols, four rounds of ammunition, the truck loaded with cattle, and the car used by the smugglers to escort the vehicle.
Further investigation into the matter is underway.
