Mumbai: Authorities are currently looking into the Lawrence Bishnoi gang's potential participation in the high-profile murder of NCP leader Baba Siddique, which occurred recently.
The former minister from Maharashtra, Siddique, was shot and killed last week outside his Mumbai office. A few hours later, a purported member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang took credit for the murder.
India Today reported that during an interrogation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Bishnoi, who is currently incarcerated, disclosed his gang's hit list, revealing new information. Among the many well-known people on this long list is comedian and Big Boss 17 winner Munawar Faruqui.
However, why is the comedian being watched by the Bishnoi gang? The comedian's security worries have lately increased after a few members of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang allegedly made an effort to harm him when he was in Delhi last month.
Two of the criminal gang members reportedly followed Faruqui and even reserved a room in the same Delhi hotel where he was staying for a September event, according to The Times of India.
But the attempt was thwarted by the intelligence service's prompt action, and the artist was soon led to safety under police protection, a source informed the publication.
As a precaution, the Mumbai Police have since stepped up security surrounding the stand-up comic in response. The gang was incensed by Faruqui's gag on Hindu idols, according to an official familiar with the case, though the precise motivations behind the targeting are still unknown. The hit job was assigned to shooters at a Delhi event in September. They travelled with him on the same flight from Mumbai and were even booked at the hotel where he was scheduled to stay. However, intelligence agencies alerted Delhi police, and the plan was thwarted.
