New Delhi, Feb 1: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday presented the Union Budget 2025 in the Parliament and announced that the government will facilitate identity cards and registration on the e-Shram portal for one crore gig workers.
The e-Shram portal serves as a 'One Stop Solution' designed to streamline the registration process for unorganised workers, making it easier for them to access government welfare schemes.
She also revealed plans for a new scheme aimed at the socio-economic upliftment of urban workers, ensuring better support and opportunities for their well-being.
“Gig workers of online platforms provide great dynamism to the ‘New Age’ services economy. Recognising their contribution, our government will arrange for their identity cards and registration on the e-Shram portal,” she said.
She further announced that gig workers will receive healthcare benefits under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY).
The Finance Minster also outlined key developments in the healthcare and infrastructure sectors. By next year, 10,000 additional seats will be introduced in medical colleges and hospitals, with a total of 75,000 new seats planned over the next five years.
Additionally, the government aims to establish daycare cancer centers in all district hospitals within the next three years. To boost infrastructure development, ministries will roll out a three-year pipeline of projects under the public-private partnership (PPP) model.
