Bhubaneswar, Feb 24: Vijaya Ekadashi is dedicated to the worship of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi and holds great significance in Hinduism.
According to religious scriptures, the ‘Ekadashi Tithi’ of ‘Krishna’ and ‘Shukla Paksha’ of every month are extremely dear to Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. Observing fast on this auspicious day and performing Vishnu Puja with devotion is believed to bring prosperity, spiritual growth, and divine blessings.
As per the Hindu Panchang, Vijaya Ekadashi falls on the Krishna Paksha (waning phase of the moon) of the Phalguna month. This year, Vijaya Ekadashi is being observed on February 24. The Ekadashi Tithi will begin on February 23 at 1:55 PM and conclude on February 24 at 1:44 PM. Devotees will observe the fast on February 24.
On this day, devotees consume ‘Satvik food’ (a type of vegetarian diet that includes fresh, organic, and plant-based ingredients) without using utensils and perform bhajan-kirtan by staying awake all night.
As per the rituals, the breaking of the fast (Parana) should be done on the ‘Dwadashi Tithi’, which follows ‘Ekadashi’. For Vijaya Ekadashi in 2025, the Parana time is from 6:50 AM to 9:08 AM on February 25. It is considered highly auspicious to break the fast within this timeframe.
After Parana, it is believed that donating food and money to the needy or temples brings prosperity and blessings.

- Brahma Muhurat: 5:11 AM – 6:01 AM
- Vijay Muhurat: 2:29 PM – 3:15 PM
- Godhuli Muhurat: 6:15 PM – 6:40 PM
- Nishita Muhurat: 12:09 AM – 12:59 AM
Puja Vidhi and Rituals for Vijaya Ekadashi:
- Devotees should wake up early and take a holy bath.
- Wear clean clothes and set up an altar for Lord Vishnu’s worship.
- Light a diya (lamp) in front of Lord Vishnu’s idol or image.
- Recite the Bhagavad Gita, Vishnu Sahasranama, or other sacred scriptures.
- Offer tulsi leaves, flowers, fruits, and Vishnu’s favorite bhog.
- Many devotees observe a strict fast, consuming only sattvic food without grains.
- Jagran (staying awake all night) and bhajan-kirtan (singing devotional songs) are considered auspicious.
Things to Avoid on Vijaya Ekadashi:
- Avoid consuming rice, as it is believed that doing so can displease Goddess Lakshmi and break the fast.
- Do not pluck tulsi leaves or flowers on this day, as it is considered inauspicious.
- Refrain from wearing black clothes; instead, opt for yellow, which is considered sacred and dear to Lord Vishnu.
- Maintain cleanliness at home and in temples.
