World’s oldest person passes away at 116 in Japan

Tokyo, January 4: Tomiko Itooka, recognized as the world's oldest person by Guinness World Records in September 2024, passed away at 116 in Ashiya, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. According to the Japanese health ministry and local officials, Itooka died of old age at 9:03 p.m. Sunday at a nursing home for the elderly.

Born on May 23, 1908, in Osaka, Itooka was the eldest of three siblings. She became Japan's oldest person in December 2023 after the passing of Fusa Tatsumi, another 116-year-old from Kashiwara, Osaka Prefecture. Itooka earned global recognition when Guinness World Records named her the world’s oldest living person, succeeding Maria Branyas Morera of Spain, who was 117 years old at the time of her death.

Known for her cheerful demeanor, Itooka enjoyed drinking her favorite lactic acid beverages and often expressed gratitude to the staff at the nursing home. “Through her long life, she gave us great courage and hope. I express my deepest condolences,” said Ashiya Mayor Ryosuke Takashima.

Japan, renowned for its high life expectancy, saw Itooka as a symbol of longevity and resilience. She lived through significant historical events and inspired many with her long and fulfilling life.

Itooka’s predecessor as Japan’s oldest person, Fusa Tatsumi, passed away in December 2023. Tatsumi had taken the title in April 2022 following the death of Kane Tanaka, who was 119 years old and lived in Fukuoka.

Japan’s life expectancy peaked in 2020, with women living an average of 87.71 years and men 81.56 years. However, the COVID-19 pandemic caused a temporary decline in life spans in 2021 and 2022. Government data shows life expectancy rose again in 2023 due to reduced deaths from the pandemic, highlighting Japan’s ongoing focus on public health.
