Bhubaneswar, Nov 22: As Prathamastami draws near, excitement is palpable across Odisha, with only a day left for the much-awaited festival. The markets are abuzz with activity, as turmeric leaves flood the local stalls in preparation for the occasion. This unique festival, celebrated with immense fervor, honors the eldest child in the family, and it brings families together to offer prayers for the well-being and prosperity of the firstborn.
Among the most cherished traditions of Prathamastami is the making of Enduri Pitha—a beloved festival delicacy. Crafted from rice flour, coconut, and jaggery, and carefully wrapped in aromatic turmeric leaves, this sweet treat is a highlight of the celebration. Its rich flavor and fragrant aroma make it a festival favorite, eagerly anticipated by everyone in the family.
The streets of Unit-1, Unit-4, and Saheed Nagar Market are bustling, as vibrant turmeric leaves line the shops, indication the arrival of Prathamastami festivities.
Smita Das, a shopper at Saheed Nagar Market, shares, "I’ve been coming here every year to buy turmeric leaves for Prathamastami. We decorate the doorways with them. It’s a tradition that brings the family together. This year, we will also prepare special sweets and endure pitha that’s a must for the occasion and pray for the health and prosperity of our firstborn."
Rina Patnaik, another shopper for turmeric leaves for the first time this year, says, “I am excited to follow the customs. We'll be offering the leaves along with fruits to Goddess Lakshmi tomorrow. I’ve also planned to cook the traditional Khicidi, enduri pitha and Kheer for the puja. It’s a moment of gratitude and joy for the family."
