Udala, Ap 28: Dedication and perseverance can turn dreams into reality. Previously engaged in other farming activities, Mangala Dehury took a leap of faith into the world of sweet corn cultivation, hoping to earn a better livelihood.
Today, his hard work has not only brought him financial rewards but has also created valuable employment opportunities for many in his community.
In the lush fields of Saikulu village, within the Gopabandhunagar block, Mangala’s thriving sweet corn farm stands as a symbol of his success.
The lush green plants spread across the land, filling the air with optimism and joy for all who witness it. With growing demand for sweet corn outside the state, Mangala’s venture has become a popular and profitable business.
Inspired by the market demand, Mangal shifted his focus to sweet corn farming. Despite starting without prior knowledge of the crop, he adapted, learned, and eventually became a well-known name for successful sweet corn cultivation. This year, on his 2-acre land, Mangala has been growing the crop and now consistently produces 7 to 9 quintals of sweet corn every day.
Selling his produce to traders at the rate of 20 rupees per kilogram, Mangala's success has exceeded even his own expectations.
The most rewarding aspect of his journey is not just the profits, but the fact that he has provided employment to over eight people, including family members. These workers are earning a livelihood by assisting in the farm work, helping to boost the local economy.
Through his sweet corn farming, Mangala Dehury has proven that hard work and adaptability can create not only a profitable business but also a sustainable source of income for himself and his community.
Mangala says, “My sweet corn is not only sold in the local market, but it has also reached neighboring areas like Kaptipada, Khunta, Badashahi, Baripada, and even towns such as Balasore, Jaleswar, Nilgiri, Soro, and Bhadrak. By supplying my corn to these places, I have been able to generate a significant income. This success has brought me immense happiness. As sweet corn farming continues to grow in our village, local people are also coming to buy corn directly from me.”
