Patna, December 14: Rail traffic on the Bhagalpur-Jamalpur line in Bihar was thrown into disarray Saturday after a goods train split into two parts near the Kharia-Pipra halt. The coupling between the train coaches broke at 8:58 a.m., affecting operations on both up and down lines for several hours.
Following the incident, 10 coaches along with the engine moved forward, while 20 coaches remained stationary at the site. Swift action by railway authorities saw the forward coaches brought to Kalyanpur station, while the stationary ones were taken to Sultanganj station to clear the tracks.
Mohammad Aqlib, Station Master at the Kharia-Pipra halt, stated, “We immediately informed senior officials in Jamalpur, who dispatched a relief train and engine to manage the situation.”
The disruption impacted not only goods train operations but also local commuters. A railway crossing near the site was closed for nearly two hours, creating long vehicle queues and inconvenience for the public.
Eyewitnesses highlighted the need for regular maintenance and inspection of rolling stock to avoid such incidents. However, a potentially grave mishap was averted due to the quick actions of the train’s driver and guard, who prevented the train from derailing.
Services resumed after hours of disruption, with the Danapur-Sahibganj Intercity being the first to pass through the cleared track. Other trains followed, gradually normalizing rail traffic in the area.
