New Delhi, March 10: A recent report by a parliamentary panel has revealed that over 70% of prisoners in Indian jails are undertrials, many of whom remain incarcerated due to their inability to provide sureties or pay the required fines.
The findings, published by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs, stress the urgent need for reforms. The report also emphasized the necessity of implementing surveillance technology at all prison entry points to better detect and prevent drug smuggling.
The committee's observations underscore the growing concern over the large number of undertrials who, despite not having been convicted, continue to be held in prison due to financial barriers or lack of sureties.
