Bhubaneswar, March 10: In a narrow escape, ten people survived a close call when a goods train struck an ambulance in Odisha’s Rayagada district on Monday. The train dragged the ambulance for around 100 meters before coming to a stop, according to officials.
The incident occurred between Shikarpai and Bhalumaska railway stations in the Kalyansinghpur block while the ambulance was crossing the railway tracks through an unauthorized passage. Despite the train traveling at speeds of 60-65 km/h, a major disaster was avoided.
Railways issue clarification
The incident took place between Sikarpai and Bhalumaska stations on the Koraput-Rayagada line, where an ambulance, crossing the railway track illegally, was struck by a goods train. The vigilant train driver acted quickly, applying the emergency brakes and stopping the train in time to prevent a major disaster.
Fortunately, the driver and all patients had already evacuated the ambulance before the collision occurred, and no injuries were reported. Although the area had been secured with fencing as of November 3, 2024, local villagers had illegally removed the barrier, leading to this dangerous trespassing incident. In response, the Railways have taken serious action and filed a case regarding this violation.
Trespassing on railway tracks is a severe offense and poses significant risks to life and safety.
