Sharjah, Sept 18: In a groundbreaking moment for Afghan cricket, the national team achieved its first-ever victory against South Africa in One Day Internationals (ODIs) during the opening match of their series in Sharjah.
The Afghan squad, under the leadership of Hashmatullah Shahidi, triumphed by six wickets, marking a significant milestone in the team’s history.
South Africa, fielding a depleted squad, struggled throughout their innings, bowled out for a mere 106 runs. Fast bowler Fazalhaq Farooqi was the standout performer, claiming four wickets for 35 runs and reaching a personal milestone of 100 ODI wickets. Young spinner Allah Gazanfar also shone with the ball, taking three wickets for 30 runs, while star spinner Rashid Khan contributed two wickets.
Afghanistan, although facing early challenges in their chase, managed to reach their target comfortably, showcasing resilience and determination. This victory is especially significant as it marks Afghanistan's first win against South Africa in two previous ODIs and three T20I matches.
