Bhubaneswar, Sep 6: The Odisha government has made a case for making it mandatory to hire electric vehicles in all departments. The transport department has written a letter to the transport commissioner in this regard following the finance department's letter. The finance department has asked the transport department to make a detailed assessment of price and maintenance of electric vehicles as the price of spare parts, battery and tyre of electric vehicles which is much higher. The transport department will soon hold a meeting of its technical committee, said a senior official. The meeting will decide on the number of vehicles that could be hired. The Centre has already asked government ministries and departments for mandatory use of electric vehicles for all officials. The Odisha government has also introduced Odisha Electric Vehicle Policy 2021. The state government is providing a 15 percent subsidy on the purchase of electric vehicles. For two-wheelers, the subsidy is up to Rs 5,000 and for three-wheelers it is Rs 10,000. Similarly, the government is providing Rs 50,000 subsidy for four-wheelers with an exemption of registration fee. The subsidy scheme introduced from September 1, 2021 will continue till December 2025. The Odisha government has provided Rs 2.96 crore subsidy to 4488 electric vehicle owners since its introduction. As many as 5466 persons had applied for subsidy out of total 16,759 electric vehicles sold in the state.
