Bhubaneswar, Dec 28: Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s scheduled visit to Odisha has been postponed in light of the sudden demise of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.
The announcement was made following the government’s decision to observe seven days of national mourning.
“All government events and celebrations have been cancelled, except condolence meetings,” stated Jajpur MP Rabindra Narayan Behera. “Amit Shahji’s visit has been cancelled as per the party’s instructions.”
Shah was originally set to arrive in Bhubaneswar on December 28 for a two-day visit, during which he was expected to attend ITBP programmes, a university event, and a BJP-related gathering at the Kalinga Stadium. He was slated to return to Delhi on December 29.
The passing of Dr. Singh, a celebrated economist and former Prime Minister, has elicited condolences from across India and around the world. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed profound grief, noting Dr. Singh’s pivotal role in reshaping India’s economy through liberal economic policies.
“His leadership as finance minister gave a new direction to the economy, and as Prime Minister, he accelerated development across various sectors,” Majhi said in his message.
Dr. Singh passed away at 92 after being hospitalised at AIIMS Delhi due to deteriorating health. Known as the architect of India’s economic liberalisation in 1991, his contributions have left an indelible mark on the nation’s development and its integration into the global market.
