Bhubaneswar, April 27: The Berhampur Lok Sabha constituency in Odisha is gearing up for an intense battle between the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The ruling BJD has nominated Bhrugu Baxipatra as its MP candidate for Berhampur Lok Sabha seat. Baxipatra, who was the BJP candidate in the last election, switched to BJD just before this election.

BJP has fielded Pradeep Panigrahi, who was previously expelled from BJD on allegations of anti-party activities. Panigrahi was elected from Gopalpur assembly seat in 2009, 2014 and 2019.
The grand old party Congress has nominated Rasmi Ranjan Patnaik, a new face in the electoral arena.

The election in Berhampur will be held on May 13, 2024. All major parties are actively campaigning in the area, making it a closely watched contest.
In 2019, BJD’s Chandra Shekhar Sahu secured victory with 443,843 votes, defeating BJP’s Bhrugu Baxipatra (348,999 votes) and Congress’s V. Chandrasekhar Naidu (142,632 votes).

In the 2014 polls, BJD’s Siddhant Mahapatra had won by a margin of 127,720 votes.
The Berhampur Lok Sabha constituency comprises seven Assembly constituencies: Chhatrapur (Scheduled Castes), Gopalpur, Brahmapur (Berhampur), Digapahandi, Chikiti, Mohana (Scheduled Tribes), and Paralakhemundi.
In 2019 electon, BJD candidate led in five constituencies out of seven assembly seats. SInce 2009, BJD candidate has been winning consecutively three times. So it became a stronghold for BJD.

This time, Berhampur remains a crucial battleground where political fortunes will be decided. The fight between “MODI GUARANTEE” and “NAVEEN CRAZE” adds further intrigue to this electoral showdown.
