Guwahati, January 13:  Assam is now gearing up to celebrate Magh Bihu, also known as Bhogali Bihu, with much enthusiasm and festive cheer. The markets are bustling with activity as people stock up on fish, traditional sweets like pitha (rice cakes), various types of laru made from coconut, jaggery, sesame seeds, rice flour, puffed rice, and other festive treats, along with fresh cream, thick curd, and golden honey.

A local resident shared, "Today is a special day for Assamese people. In Assam, Bihu is celebrated with great excitement. We are here to buy our favorite fish."

Shops in Guwahati are crowded as people prepare for the grand festivities, marking the biggest festival in the state. Magh Bihu, or Bhogali Bihu, is a harvest festival celebrated during the month of Magh, in mid-January, to signify the end of the harvesting season. The festival is deeply rooted in the agricultural traditions of Assam and is celebrated with community feasts, marking the conclusion of a successful harvest. The night before Magh Bihu, known as Uruka or Bihu Eve, will be celebrated this Monday, with the main festivities taking place on Tuesday.

Magh Bihu symbolizes gratitude to the God of Fire and is marked by the lighting of a ceremonial bonfire, called Meji. The celebrations are also a time for people to come together, feasting and engage in various cultural rituals.
