New Delhi, December 16: The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, aimed at enabling simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, is scheduled for introduction in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal will present the Bill, often referred to as the "One Nation, One Election" initiative.
Following its introduction, Meghwal is expected to propose that Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla refer the Bill to a Joint Parliamentary Committee for extensive deliberation and consultation. The move signals a significant step in the government's push for synchronizing national and state election schedules, a proposal that has sparked debates across the political spectrum.
This constitutional amendment will require broad consensus and could reshape the electoral landscape if implemented.
