Ahmedabad, April 8: In a bid to revive its political fortunes, the Congress kicked off its two-day 84th AICC convention in Ahmedabad — its first in Gujarat in 64 years. Top leaders including Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, and Rahul Gandhi are leading discussions on the party’s future strategy, with an eye on upcoming state polls and the 2027 Gujarat Assembly elections.

At the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting held at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Memorial, Kharge slammed the BJP-RSS, accusing them of spreading communal divisions and distorting the legacies of national icons like Patel and Nehru. He highlighted Patel’s historic support for Nehru, countering the narrative that the two leaders were at odds.

Key topics on the table include strengthening grassroots units, empowering district committees, building stronger alliances, and improving public outreach. The main AICC session, themed “Nyaypath: Sankalp, Samarpan aur Sangharsh”, will take place April 9 on the Sabarmati riverfront, with over 1,700 delegates expected.

The Congress aims to give more decision-making power to local units and enhance accountability in leadership — echoing goals set in previous party declarations. Symbolically held in PM Modi’s home state, the meet also signals Congress’ intent to reconnect with Gujarat’s legacy and voters.
