Police encounter rocks Bhubaneswar! Drug mafia nabbed with brown sugar worth Rs 20 lakh

Bhubaneswar, Apr 11: In a major crackdown on drug smuggling, the Commissionerate Police nabbed a drug mafia following an encounter in Khandagiri area of Bhubaneswar this morning. 

The cops also recovered and seized brown sugar worth Rs 20 lakh and a pistol from his possession.

The drug mafia, identified as Sheikh Jamshed, sustained two bullet injuries in his leg and has been admitted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar for treatment.

According to police sources, the encounter was carried out by the Special Crime Unit of the Commissionerate Police to nab Jamshed, who was under surveillance while traveling from Pokhariput to Khandagiri. The operation was led by Special Crime Unit officer Anup Kanungo.

When the cops tried to intercept him, he allegedly opened fire on them in an attempt to escape. In retaliation, the police fired back, injuring him with two bullets in the leg.

Further investigation into the matter is underway to uncover more links in the drug network, said the police.

It is worth mentioning that Jamshed is a well-known figure in the drug trade and has multiple criminal cases registered against him in Lalbag, Balianta, and Badagada police stations. 

He had also been previously arrested by the Crime Branch and the Special Task Force (STF).
