Sambalpur, Mar 13: In a significant move for wildlife conservation, Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary has been declared a shock-free and zero electrocution zone, extending one kilometer inside and outside its boundaries.
This action comes in response to the tragic electrocution of several wild animals, including Schedule-1 species such as the Royal Bengal Tiger and leopards, who fell victim to illegal electrocution traps set by villagers to safeguard their farmlands.
The initiative, covering a 100-km stretch along the sanctuary's western boundary, is backed by 72 squads across 12 patrolling teams.
Equipped with live wire detectors and metal detectors, the teams will work diligently to curb illegal poaching activities in the region.
A crucial aspect of this project involves the support of villagers from 68 bordering villages, who have committed to ending the harmful practice of electrocution traps.
This partnership marks a pivotal step toward preserving wildlife and fostering community-driven conservation efforts.
Authorities are optimistic that this initiative will lead to a 20-30% increase in the animal population within Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary, while simultaneously reducing human-animal conflicts and creating a safer environment for wildlife to thrive.
