Devotees take dip in Chandrabhaga on auspicious day of Samba Dashami

Konark, Jan 9: A large number of devotees thronged Chandrabhaga beach near Konark in Odisha’s Puri district to perform puja to Sun on the occasion of Samba Dashami in the wee hour of Thursday.

 

The people took holy dip in the sea on the auspicious day. Then they performed puja to Sun God and offered Prasad and prayer. The rituals will continue till noon.

 

The local administration had made adequate security arrangements at Konark as tourists, visitors and picnickers also organised feast in the casuarina forest along the beach.

 

Samba Dashami is a unique ritual observed in the month of Pausha and Odia people across and outside the State observe this day with religious fervour.

 

On this day mothers observe special puja and rituals dedicated to Lord Sun for the good health and long life of their children. Some of them also offered different types of Prasad in names of their children

 

They offer special food like Khichdi, different types of pitha in local parlance, sweets, fruits and Ghadghadia Tarkari to Sun God. Each prepared food item is offered in the name of certain family member. As per the legend, ‘Samba’, son of Lord Krishna was suffering from leprosy. It was cured by the Sun God after 12 years of penance near Konark. Hence, the Odia mothers also follow the ritual of praying to the Sun God on ‘Samba Dashami’ to keep their kids hearty and healthy.
