Puri, Jan 20: The annual census of Irrawaddy dolphins began in Chilika Lake on Monday, official sources said.
A total of 18 teams have joined the census in the three zones – Southern, Northern, and Central in the Chilika. Moreover, OUAT students, boat associates, Chilika Development Authority (CDA), and other volunteers are also taking part in the annual exercise.
They are equipped with modern gadgets and given exclusive training on videography, photography, binoculars, and GPS for counting. The census is conducted in the Satpada, Balugaon, Tangi, Krishnaprasad, and Rambha ranges.
Eight teams are counting in the Satpada range while 10 teams are in other ranges. The census starts at 6.00 am and continues till noon.
