New Delhi, April 3: Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal has criticized the BJP’s approach to the Waqf Amendment Bill, accusing the party of using the Muslim issue for political gains. Sibal remarked, "Since 2014, the BJP’s political narrative has revolved around issues like Love Jihad, flood jihad, 'thook' jihad, and the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). Their strategy is clear—they aim to keep the Muslim issue alive for their electoral advantage."

Sibal further questioned the BJP's focus, suggesting that if changes are needed, they should target the Hindu Code Bill instead. "The 1995 Waqf Bill mandates a minimum of two women’s reservations on the Waqf Board, but the current amendment restricts it to a maximum of two. If reforms are necessary, they should be applied to the Hindu Code Bill," he said.

He also highlighted concerns about property ownership, stating, "If the property belongs to me, how can it be taken over by someone else? If it’s usurped, it’s no longer a Waqf. If I donate half of my property to Waqf, that should not be an issue."

The Lok Sabha passed the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 after an intense debate that extended past midnight. Members of the INDIA bloc strongly opposed the legislation, while the BJP and its allies supported it, claiming it would enhance transparency and improve Waqf board efficiency. Speaker Om Birla announced the division result, stating, "Subject to correction, Ayes 288, Noes 232. The majority is in favor of the proposal."

The revised bill, introduced after incorporating recommendations from the Joint Parliamentary Committee, seeks to amend the 1995 Act. Its objectives include improving the administration and management of Waqf properties, addressing the shortcomings of the previous legislation, streamlining registration processes, and leveraging technology for better record-keeping.
