In a solemn turn of events, India bids farewell to one of its most illustrious scientists, Dr. R Chidambaram. The eminent nuclear physicist, known for his pivotal roles in India's atomic explosions at Pokhran in 1974 and 1998, passed away in Mumbai at the age of 88. His contributions have left an indelible mark on the country's scientific and strategic landscape.
Dr. Rajagopala Chidambaram was not just a key player in India's nuclear advancements but also a visionary leader whose influence extended far beyond the realms of science. As the Chairman of India's Atomic Energy Commission, he played a crucial role in making India a recognized nuclear weapons state. He served as the Director of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre from 1990 to 1993, and later as the Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission and Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Atomic Energy, from 1993 to 2000. His international acclaim is evidenced by his tenure as the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) from 1994 to 1995, and as a member of the IAEA’s Commission of Eminent Persons.
His work earned him the Padma Vibhushan, one of India’s highest civilian awards, reflecting his profound impact on the nation's nuclear and scientific capabilities. Dr. Chidambaram’s contributions to India’s self-reliance in nuclear technology are unparalleled, shaping the country’s strategic policies and bolstering its defense capabilities.
Secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy, Dr. Ajit Kumar Mohanty, lauded Dr. Chidambaram as a titan in the field of science and technology, emphasizing that his loss is an irreparable one for both the scientific community and the nation. “Dr. Chidambaram was a doyen of science and technology whose contributions furthered India’s nuclear prowess and strategic self-reliance.
