Brazil, Dec 22:In a tragic incident, at least 38 people were killed in a furious truck-bus collision in Brazil's Minas Gerais state on Sunday.
Apart from the casualties, dozens of passengers are reportedly critical in the mishap, said sources.
According to reports, a passenger bus collided with a truck on highway BR-116 near Teòfilo Otoni. The incident reportedly occurred after the bus, carrying 45 passengers from Sao Paulo, blew a tyre, causing the driver to lose control and crash into the truck.
Following the initial impact, another car collided with the wreckage, though all three of its occupants survived, the fire department stated.
The crash occurred around 4 am today, with the bus subsequently bursting into flames.
Minas Gerais Governor Romeu Zema announced a full mobilisation of resources to assist victims and their families. He shared condolences on social media, noting that security forces had been working to aid rescue efforts.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also expressed his grief on the mishap.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the accident’s cause.
