Bhubaneswar: The Khordha District Chess Championship 2024 commenced at St. Joseph High School here on Friday, setting a new benchmark with a record 215 participants—the largest turnout ever for a district-level chess tournament in the state.
The grand opening ceremony was attended by an esteemed panel of dignitaries, including Chief Guest Babu Singh, MLA, Ekamra Constituency, Bhubaneswar, and Organising President Jagannath Pradhan , social worker cum BJP Leader Central Constituency, Bhubaneswar and Priyadarshi Mishra, BJP Leader North Constituency, Bhubaneswar. Adding to the ceremony’s prestige was the presence of IM Satyapragyan, an alumnus of St. Joseph High School, who returned to compete at his alma mater after many years. Sister Lizy Thomas, Principal of St. Joseph High School, warmly welcomed the guests and participants, expressing pride in hosting such a monumental event.
The event was further graced by Subhasis Patnaik, Secretary of Khordha District Chess Association (KDCA), Shakti Ranjan Mohanty, President of KDCA, Pradipta Behera, Treasurer, Saroj Behera, Joint Secretary, Narayan Hota, EC Member KDCA and Organizing Secretary cum member KDCA Swayangsu Satyakam. Satya Ranjan Pattnaik , Secy. S R Centre also played a key role in making the championship a grand success.
IM Satyapragyan’s participation has been a major attraction for the tournament, alongside second seed Soumya Ranjan Mishra, both promising a thrilling competition. The championship, organized under the banner of KDCA, is set to unfold in nine rounds of intense matches over the coming days.
After three rounds 23 Players leading with a score of 3 points & six players leading with 2.5 points.
After three rounds, the competition has already seen exciting battles on the board, with players of all ages showcasing their talent. The tournament marks a significant milestone for chess in Khordha, bringing together young talents and seasoned players in an electrifying atmosphere.
The Championship is officiated by experienced Arbiters IA Suresh Chandra Sahoo, IA Bhabesh Mohanty & IA Santosh Mohapatra.The championship will be completed on 29th December
