Cuttack: Tons of wastes are being dumped in the Mahanadi River daily. The wastes are not taken to designated landfill but are dumped along the river banks of Mahanadi. This Over the period, has created a mountain of garbage along the riverbank. Not only that the wastes / dump are set on fire, releasing toxic fumes that affect the people living nearby.
The people living along the riverbank and the general public are suffering from the smoke and pollution caused by the waste. The Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) though spends crores of rupees on waste management, but the situation remains grim. People are now questioning the effectiveness of the CMC's cleaning efforts.
The CMC has contracted the waste management in two wards, 48 and 49, to private companies for collection of garbage from door to door. They are supposed to collect the waste and transport it to the landfill in Satichoura. However, they dump the waste on the banks of the Mahanadi River near Jagatpur Industrial Area. This has been continuing for months, and a mountain of garbage has accumulated along the riverbank over the period of time. The stench from the rotting garbage is untolerable, and the pollution is affecting the health of the people living nearby.
The CMC is violating environmental regulations by dumping the waste on the riverbank. The people living along the riverbank are suffering from the pollution, and the river itself is being choked by the waste. The CMC needs to take action to stop this illegal dumping and ensure that the waste is properly disposed of. The CMC Commissioner, when asked has promised that he will discuss the issue with the relevant officials and take adequate steps for keeping the environment clean.
