Kolkata, October 6: Junior doctors went on an indefinite hunger strike on Sunday over their demands from the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government and asserted that they would continue to demonstrate their protest until their demands for justice on humanitarian grounds are not met.
Six doctors, led by Dr. Sayantani, have begun an indefinite hunger strike, demanding justice and improved hospital security measures, a plea they’ve pursued since August.
The strike emphasizes that their fight is not against the public but for the public welfare and the protection of healthcare professionals, especially women.
Despite the protest, most doctors have resumed work to ensure patient care during Navratri, though six representatives continue the hunger strike.
The Supreme Court has taken notice of the situation, requesting a report from the National Task Force concerning safety issues in hospitals.
Protests have spread to other medical institutions like North Bengal Medical College, and doctors from private hospitals have joined in by holding symbolic protests.
Their collective demand is clear: urgent action to prevent further incidents like Abhaya’s tragic death and ensure the safety of all medical professionals.
