Prayagraj (UP), January 29: At least 30 people have tragically lost their lives, and 60 others have been injured in a stampede at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj early on Wednesday morning,  said Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Vaibhav Krishna.

In a press conference, Krishna informed that 25 bodies have been identified, while five are yet to be recognized.

The deceased include individuals from various states: four from Karnataka, one from Assam, and one from Gujarat. The injured are currently receiving treatment at a local medical college, with 36 people reported to be under care.

The DIG provided further details on the incident, explaining that the stampede occurred between 1 am and 2 am when a massive crowd gathered on the Akhara Marg in anticipation of the holy dip. The crowd caused the barricades to collapse, leading to a rush that trampled many devotees. Emergency responders transported around 90 people to hospitals, but sadly, 30 people lost their lives.

In response to the situation, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has postponed his planned visit to Delhi for the election campaign to monitor the situation at the Maha Kumbh.
