Mark Carney to become next Prime Minister of Canada

Ottawa (Canada), Mar 10: Former central banker Mark Carney received a landslide victory in the race to lead the Federal Liberal Party and is all set to become the next Prime Minister of Canada.

Carney, who swept the party poll with 85.9 per cent of the votes, will succeed embattled Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and hold the office till the elections scheduled later this year.

He has led both the British and Canadian central banks, making him well-qualified to guide the country through the crisis caused by Trump’s tariffs. However, he is new to politics and has never been elected to office.

Last week, Donald Trump announced a 25% tax on all Canadian goods, except for the auto and energy industries. These tariffs have the potential to weaken Canada’s already struggling economy and lead to a recession.

In his speeches and social media posts, Trump has referred to Canada as the "51st state" of the U.S. and called its prime minister a "governor."

After his election, Carney challenged Trump and said, “We didn’t ask for this fight, but Canadians are always ready when someone else drops the gloves”.

He further added that, “America is not Canada. And Canada never, ever, will be part of America in any way, shape or form.”

Carney, who supports retaliatory tariffs against the US, said that, "Our tariffs will stay in place until the Americans treat us with respect." He also suggested that Canada might use its electricity supply to the U.S. as leverage.

It is worth mentioning that Trudeau has led the Liberal Party for 13 years and served as prime minister for nearly a decade. In January, he agreed to step down due to growing opposition within his party and declining poll numbers, which put the Liberals at risk in the upcoming election.

His time as prime minister was marked by tensions with India, perceived support for Khalistanis, and a sharp style that fueled conflicts with Trump.

Carney, who has never held elected office, is focused on the economic crisis with the U.S. and won’t rely on Khalistani support in the same way. Managing economic crises is not new for him—when he was the governor of the Bank of England, he helped Britain navigate Brexit.
