Odisha: 12-hour shutdown in Jeypore protesting death of jeweler over harassment by taxmen

Jeypore, Nov 2: The Jeypore Chamber of Commerce is observing a 12-hour shutdown of all business establishments in the town today from 6 am to 6 pm.
The Jeypore Chamber of Commerce is observing the shutdown over death of a local jeweler, Haraprasad Rao, who died of heart attack following alleged harassment by CT & GST officials.
The commercial body is protesting the excessive stress caused by the taxmen during raid on his jewelery shop and led to her untimely death.
“Rao’s jewelry shop was raided by CT & GST officials on the Tuesday during Dhanteras festival. The raid in presence of his loyal customers led to excess stress and anxiety and ultimately he died of heart attack,” said the functionaries of Jeypore Chamber of Commerce.
Rao’s younger brother has alleged that the raid was intentional to harass him,t that led to his death. “The GST officials conducted raid without any valid reason and found nothing expect ruining my brother’s reputation. He was worried over the raid and was under stress, said”, Rao’s brother.
The commercial body has condemned the harassment and demanded action against the taxmen.
