Bhubaneswar, February 16: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station, which claimed 18 lives on Saturday night.
Taking to social media platform X, Majhi wrote, "Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of precious lives in the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured."
The stampede occurred around 10 PM on Saturday when a massive crowd of devotees, en route to Prayagraj for the upcoming Maha Kumbh 2025, caused severe overcrowding at the station. Chaos intensified as passengers gathered on platform 14, where the Prayagraj Express was stationed, while delays in the Swatantrata Senani Express and Bhubaneswar Rajdhani further exacerbated congestion on platforms 12, 13, and 14.
Authorities have announced compensation for the victims’ families—₹10 lakh for the deceased, ₹2.5 lakh for those seriously injured, and ₹1 lakh for those with minor injuries.
President Droupadi Murmu expressed her condolences, stating, "Deeply anguished to know about the loss of lives in a stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and pray for the speedy recovery of those injured."
