Bhubaneswar: Odisha FC's title defence began with a stalemate against last season's runners-up Gokulam Kerala FC in the Indian Women’s League 2024-25 opener at the EMS Corporation Stadium on Friday. The teams battled it out for a 1-1 draw, setting the tone for the title race this season.
The game opened with Odisha controlling possession and creating multiple opportunities. Jennifer showcased her attacking intent with a powerful strike from the left flank, winning an early corner in the fourth minute. The ensuing corner nearly resulted in a goal, narrowly missing the target. Later, in the 17th minute, Neha delivered a brilliant lofted ball to the far post, but Lynda’s effort went just wide. Gokulam relied heavily on their foreign players, with Phoeby Owiti standing out through her dynamic link-up play and offensive runs.
The Kalinga Warriors broke the deadlock in the 61st minute as Lynda Kom Serto, a recent addition to India’s national team, unleashed a stunning left-footed strike from outside the box, putting Odisha FC ahead.
The hosts tested the Kalinga Warriors' defence on multiple occasions and finally equalised in the 87th minute as Hemam Shilky Devi capitalised on a defensive lapse to smash a loose ball into the net.
In the dying moments, Shreya Hooda's crucial save denied Gokulam’s Faila Ikwaput, who had a golden opportunity to score. With this draw, Odisha FC Women will travel to Delhi to face Hops FC on Tuesday, January 16, 2025.
