Bhubaneswar: After a month-long international break, Odisha FC Women are set to face table-toppers East Bengal FC in the Indian Women’s League (IWL) 2024-25 on Sunday here at the Kalinga Stadium.

The Kalinga warriors head into this fixture after a 1-1 draw against Kickstart FC at Bengaluru before the break. Coach Crispin Chhetri believes the international break has been beneficial for the team, allowing them to regroup and address past mistakes. He said: "This break is good for everyone. It gives coaches a chance to fix mistakes, strengthen weak areas like set pieces, and improve clinical finishing in front of goal. It’s helped us regroup."

East Bengal FC has had a strong start to the season, leading the table with 15 points from five wins and one loss. Their only defeat came in a 3-2 loss to Gokulam Kerala.

Chhetri is fully aware of the challenge ahead, especially facing the league leaders. He stressed the importance of continuing the team's recent improvement:  "East Bengal FC has been a very strong team this season. Our focus will be to build on what we’ve been doing well in recent matches and function as a team."

He also addressed the team's struggles under pressure, particularly when facing teams with fewer players:  "We’ve made progress from previous matches. Our squad is new, and it takes time to gel. We are learning from our mistakes and getting better with each game."

Veteran player Kiran, who brings experience from playing in Europe, said: "My experience in Europe helps me support the team in tough situations. My goal is to win the title with Odisha FC this season, and we are committed to giving our best in every match."

Kiran is also motivated to help Odisha FC achieve its goals this season. She expressed her ambitions, stating: "IWL is developing day by day, season by season, and as players, we are growing along with it. The longer the tournament lasts, the better our football will be. My personal goal this season is to win the title with Odisha FC. We are giving our best in training, and we will give our hundred percent in every match to win and clinch the title."
