Odisha govt approves pension for people detained in jails during emergency

Bhubaneswar, Jan 13: The Odisha government today approved pension of Rs 20,000 and other benefits for people detained in jails during the emergency.

The Home department has issued a notification in this regard. 

According to the notification, the people who were detained in jail under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA), Defence of India Rules (DIR), The Defence of Internal Security of India Rules (DISIR) between June 25, 1975 and March 21, 1977, will get the benefits.

The monthly pension will be provided irrespective of the duration of detention. In addition to the monthly pension, the government will also cover their medical expenses.

The government has clarified that these benefits will be provided from 1 January 2025 with no retrospective payment for the period before this date.

Earlier, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi declared that those who were arrested during the 21-month Emergency period will be eligible for a monthly pension of Rs 20,000.
