Bhubaneswar, Sept 13: The Odisha government on Friday revoked its proposal for installation of liquor shacks along Puri beach following opposition by various institutions and social activists.
The Excise Department changed the earlier decision considering the spiritual, social and cultural aspects of the pilgrim town.
Besides, the Excise Department has said no liquor shops will be allowed within 5 km radius of spiritual destinations of the state.
Notably, widespread protest mounted against the proposed installation of liquor shacks along Puri beach.
The protesters argued that establishing liquor shacks on Puri beach would compromise the sanctity of Mahodadhi Teerth. Besides, it could potentially lead to law and order issues, they added.
A huge rally was organised by Milita Odisha Nisha Nibaran Abhijan and Tirthkshetra Surakshya Milita Manch and the activists submitted submit a written demand at Puri district collector’s office to revoke the proposal.
