Bhubaneswar, April 20: In a shocking turn of events, a man accused in a 2024 rape case allegedly shot himself in an attempt to falsely implicate the victim's family in a febricated attack.
The incident took place late Friday night near Balipatna police station on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar. The accused, identified as Dipti Ranjan Mohapatra alias Kuna from Guapur village, sustained a gunshot wound to his hand and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
According to police, the preliminary investigation suggests the injury was self-inflicted. Dipti allegedly used a country-made pistol to shoot himself near the residence of the survivor, attempting to create the impression that her family had attacked him.
“Dipti was earlier arrested in connection with a 2024 rape case. This act appears to be a deliberate attempt to settle scores and drag the survivor’s family into another legal battle,” a police official said. “He will be arrested once his medical condition permits.”
In this connection, police have also arrested Amresh Pradhan alias Banguru, who allegedly helped Dipti procure the firearm used in the act.
A detailed investigation into the matter is underway.
