Bhubaneswar: Odisha will not be witnessing day time maximum temperature breaching 38 deg C and touching 40 deg C in the first 9-days of March..
As per the IMD model predictions based on the prevailing and evolving weather conditions, the State’s western region will record below 38 deg C till March 10th. The first week of March will not be breathing fire.
WEATHER SYNPOTIC FEATURES TODAY
- A western disturbance persists roughly over Iran and Afghanistan
- A north south axis trough persisting, running over western states up to J and K etc.
- An upper air cyclonic circulation over east equatorial Indian Ocean and adjacent south west bay of Bengal is now lying over west –equatorial Indian ocean and adjoining Comorin and Maldives area.

EVOLVING WEATHER FEATURES SIMPLIFIED
A study of various weather models like IMD, ACCESS and NCEP-GFS reveals the following.
- The north south axis trough will shift more westward, away from India
- A low pressure area will be formed over Odisha in next 24 hrs.
- North south axis trough will be over the Bay of Bengal along the eastern coast of India on Monday
- Another north south axis trough will from on March 4 and will be over Odisha.
- A low will again form over Bay of Bengal on March 7 (see the image below)
DAY WISE MAXIMUM TEMPERATURES IN ODISHA
As consequence of formation of cyclonic circulations, passing over of north south axis trough line, the State is unlikely to witness high day time temperature in the first week of March.
Here is the day wise temperature in different districts that may prevail over the next 10-days.
- MARCH 3: Balangir and Kalahandi districts may record maximum temperature in the range of 38-40deg C
- Rest of Odisha may record maximum day time temperature of around 36-37 deg C.
- MARCH 4: Day time maximum temperature may hover around 39 deg C in the districts like Balangir, Kalahandi, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, some places in Sambalpur, Deogarh and Keonjhar
- Day time temperature in Cuttack, Bhubaneswar will hover around 36-37deg C.
- MARCH 5: Maximum temperatures across Odisha will see a dip.
- Western Odisha districts will see maximum temperature down by 2 deg C to around 36 deg C
- Coastal Odisha will record maximum temperature in the range of around 34-35 deg C
- MARCH 6: Western Odisha will record a dip in maximum temperature further to around 35deg C
- MARCH 7: Maximum temperature will dip further to around 34 deg C in whole of Odisha, with some places recording around 35/36 deg C
WEATHER WILL TAKE TURN
The model data suggest a rise in the day time maximum temperature from March 9 onwards owing to weakening of winds over the State.
Weakening of winds and formation of an anticyclone over Odisha may lead to rise in the day time maximum temperature from March 10 onwards.
Following the weather developments predicted, the day time maximum temperature at some places in Odisha may breach the psychological barrier of 40 deg C.
- MARCH 10: Nuapada district may record over 40 deg C
- MARCH 12: majority of districts in Odisha may record maximum temperature in the range of 39/40deg C
- Coastal districts may record 38/39 deg C temperature.
