Colombo [Sri Lanka], April 5: Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted "extensive and productive talks" with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in Colombo on Saturday. This marks a significant moment as PM Modi becomes the first foreign leader to be hosted by President Dissanayake since he took office.

In a post on X, PM Modi expressed his appreciation, stating, "A few months ago, President Dissanayake chose India for his first overseas visit after becoming President. Today, I have the honor of being the first foreign leader he is hosting in his presidency. This highlights his personal dedication to strengthening India-Sri Lanka ties and reflects the deep, enduring bond between our nations."

During the visit, several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed between the two countries, including a trilateral MoU involving India, Sri Lanka, and the United Arab Emirates. This agreement focuses on the development of Trincomalee in Sri Lanka as an energy hub.

Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal provided further insights into the discussions, emphasizing the shared commitment to deepening bilateral ties. "PM Modi and President Dissanayake discussed avenues to further enhance the special and close India-Sri Lanka relationship. As a vital partner in India's 'Neighbourhood First Policy' and Vision MAHASAGAR, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to realizing the joint vision of fostering partnerships for a shared future," Jaiswal stated in a post on X.

He further highlighted India's continued support for Sri Lanka's economic recovery, with PM Modi reaffirming India's dedication to standing by Sri Lanka during its growth journey.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi received a ceremonial welcome at Independence Square, marking the first time Sri Lanka has honored a visiting leader in this manner. His visit, the first to Sri Lanka since 2019, comes at a time of renewed emphasis on regional development and cultural engagement.

Upon his arrival on Friday, PM Modi was warmly welcomed by six senior Sri Lankan ministers, despite the rain. He also took the opportunity to engage with members of the Indian diaspora and enjoy a traditional puppet performance. (Agency Input)
