Abuja [Nigeria], November 17: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja during his historic first visit to Nigeria. This marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in 17 years.
President Tinubu welcomed PM Modi with a warm message on X, expressing eagerness to expand the strategic partnership between the two nations. "Our bilateral discussions will enhance cooperation in critical sectors," Tinubu noted.
Upon his arrival in Abuja, PM Modi was greeted by Minister Nyesom Ezenwo Wike and presented with the symbolic 'Key to the City,' reflecting the trust and honour Nigeria extends to India.
During their discussions, both leaders focused on strengthening economic, energy, and defence collaboration. They exchanged signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to enhance bilateral cooperation.
Highlighting India's development partnership with Nigeria, PM Modi noted, "This visit reaffirms our shared belief in democracy and pluralism and aims to deepen our warm and friendly ties."
India and Nigeria have been strategic partners since 2007, with over 200 Indian companies investing $27 billion in Nigeria's key sectors. PM Modi's visit is part of a three-nation tour, including stops in Brazil and Guyana, to bolster India's global partnerships.
