New Delhi, February 13: The Ministry of Home Affairs has announced the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur, marking a significant political shift in the northeastern state.
The assembly has also been put under suspended animation.
Announcing the proclamation of the central rule, a notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs said President Droupadi Murmu thinks that "a situation has arisen in which the government of that state cannot be carried on by the provisions of the Constitution".
"Now, therefore, in the exercise of the powers conferred by Article 356 of the Constitution, and of all other powers enabling me in that behalf, I hereby proclaim that I – assume to myself as President of India all functions of the Government of the State of Manipur and all powers vested in or exercisable by the Governor of that State," the notification said.
The assembly has been put under suspended animation, the notification added.
The decision comes just four days after Chief Minister N. Biren Singh stepped down from his position on February 9.
This move follows a period of political uncertainty in Manipur, leading to the central government’s intervention to maintain governance and stability in the state.
N. Biren Singh had on Sunday stepped down as the Chief Minister of Manipur on Sunday, ahead of the upcoming Budget session of the state assembly
The resignation comes amid growing pressure for Singh to step down, especially after ongoing ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities since May 2023.
