New Delhi, Dec 7: Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das held an important meeting with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday at her North Block office, sparking speculation about a possible extension of his tenure just days before its scheduled end.
The meeting took place just a day after the recent monetary policy meeting and just before Das's current term expires on December 10.
Das has been at the helm of the RBI for six years, and the 30-minute meeting between him and Sitharaman has fueled discussions about the possibility of an extension. If granted, Das would surpass Benegal Rama Rau as the longest-serving RBI Governor, a position held by Rau from 1949 to 1957.
With over 40 years of experience in public service, including roles as Secretary of Revenue and Economic Affairs, Das is a seasoned figure in governance and economic policymaking. He became the 25th Governor of the RBI on December 12, 2018, and played a key role in the preparation of eight Union Budgets. Das holds a postgraduate degree from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University.
