New Delhi, January 29: The parents of the victim in Kolkata's RG Kar rape and murder case have withdrawn their plea from the Supreme Court, which sought a fresh investigation into the incident.
The plea was originally filed as an Intervention Application (IA) in the suo motu case registered by the Supreme Court in August last year, shortly after the crime took place. However, during Wednesday’s hearing, a Bench comprising Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar questioned the necessity of proceeding with the matter, as a similar plea had already been submitted before the Calcutta High Court.
Senior Advocate Karuna Nundy, representing the victim’s parents, was cautioned by the Court to be mindful of her arguments, given that the sole accused, Sanjoy Roy, had already been convicted. The Court advised that instead of continuing with the withdrawn plea, a fresh one could be filed if necessary. Following a brief exchange, Nundy withdrew the plea, retaining the liberty to submit a new one as per the Court’s directive.
On January 20, a Sealdah Civil and Criminal Court convicted Sanjoy Roy and sentenced him to life imprisonment for the rape and murder. However, the verdict has sparked outrage, particularly among medical professionals, who are demanding the death penalty for Roy. Additionally, concerns have been raised regarding the investigation process, prompting renewed calls for a reinvestigation.
