New Delhi, February 12: The Supreme Court has heavily criticized the practice of announcing freebies before elections, stating that such incentives discourage people from working.

During a hearing on urban homelessness, a bench comprising Justices BR Gavai and Augustine George Masih voiced concerns over how pre-election handouts—such as free rations and direct financial aid—are fostering dependency rather than encouraging productivity.

"Unfortunately, because of these freebies, people are not willing to work. They are receiving free rations and money without any effort," remarked Justice Gavai.

The court further emphasized the need to integrate homeless individuals into mainstream society, allowing them to contribute to national progress. "We appreciate the concern for their well-being, but wouldn’t it be better to make them part of the mainstream and enable them to participate in the country’s development?" the bench observed.

Attorney General R. Venkataramani informed the court that the Centre is working on an urban poverty alleviation mission aimed at addressing key concerns, including shelter for the homeless. In response, the bench sought a timeline for implementing the initiative. The matter is set to be heard again in six weeks.
