Chennai, March 27: The Tamil Nadu Assembly on Thursday passed a resolution strongly opposing the Centre’s proposed amendments to the Waqf Bill 2024, urging the Union Government to withdraw it, as it would negatively impact the minority Muslim community.
Chief Minister M K Stalin accused the provisions of the amendment bill of constituting an undue interference in religious affairs. The resolution was passed despite a protest and walkout by BJP members, and received support from all other political parties, including the principal opposition AIADMK and the PMK, a BJP ally.
In response, the BJP criticized the resolution, accusing the ruling DMK of engaging in "divisive politics."
