Hyderabad, Mar 9: In a recent development in the rescue operation to trace the eight persons trapped under the debris of the partially collapsed Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel in Telangana’s Nagarkurnool district, the cadaver dogs from Kerala have identified a possible spot for human presence under the rubble.
As per reports, these special dogs are trained to locate missing humans and human bodies and brought from Kerala by a special helicopter three days ago. These dogs of the Belgian Malinois breed detected human presence at the D-2 point, approximately 100 meters from the accident site, in the final section of the 14-km-long tunnel. They can detect smell even from a depth of 15 feet.
With anticipation of tracing some of the missing persons by the evening, the rescue workers were carefully excavating silt at the identified location.
Reportedly, the rescue workers found human parts of a person six feet under the debris last night following which efforts were underway around the location to pull out the body.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Indian Army, Navy, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and other agencies have been actively working to locate the trapped people.
Notably, authorities deployed robots for rescue operations on Saturday to speed up the efforts.
Equipped with cameras, infrared sensors, and robotic arms, these robots are being used to assess conditions inside the tunnel and assist in the extraction process.
Notably, eight persons, including four laborers, two engineers and two machine operators, hailing from Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir, have been trapped in the tunnel since February 22 when a portion of the tunnel roof collapsed during the excavation.
