Kannauj (UP), January 11 : A building under construction at the Kannauj railway station collapsed on Saturday afternoon, trapping approximately 24 workers beneath the debris, according to a senior official. Six workers have been rescued and are receiving medical treatment at the hospital.
Initial footage from the scene revealed a chaotic situation, with dust clouds, broken beams, and crowds as bystanders attempted to assist those trapped.
District Magistrate (DM) Shubhrant Kumar Shukl confirmed that the collapse occurred when the shuttering of the roof, a temporary support structure for setting concrete, gave way. "Our primary focus is to rescue the workers trapped under the rubble. We are utilizing all available resources for the operation," he said. Shukl, along with other senior officials, rushed to the site to oversee the rescue efforts.
One worker, Mahesh Kumar, shared his experience of narrowly escaping the collapse. "As soon as the concrete was poured over the shuttering, it suddenly gave way. Everyone fell, but I was standing at the edge and managed to escape," he recalled.
In response to the incident, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has instructed officials to prioritize the safe recovery of the trapped individuals and ensure they receive proper medical care. State Relief Commissioner Bhanu Chandra Goswami is coordinating with Kannauj district authorities to expedite the relief efforts.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been deployed to assist with the rescue operation. Ambulances are on standby, ready to transport injured workers to the hospital. The district hospital’s emergency ward is also on alert, with medical personnel prepared to handle any incoming casualties.
